No CWD in West Virginia's Hampshire County

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) has good news to report concerning the results of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) testing in Hampshire County, according to Director Frank Jezioro. Samples collected by DNR personnel from 1,015 hunter-harvested deer in Hampshire County this past fall were tested for CWD at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. CWD was not detected in any of these most recent samples.

From his obscure laboratory just off the Beltline on Madison's West Side, Hon Ip is keeping close track of birds in Alaska - and helping lead the country's lookout for bird flu.

Ip, who oversees the diagnostic virology lab at the little-known National Wildlife Health Center, is preparing for the 30-year-old center's largest project ever: surveillance for the H5N1 avian influenza virus that has swept through Asia and recently appeared in Eastern Europe and nearby Turkey.
