The United States Geological Survey released the 2009 national surveillance plan for monitoring for H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus in migratory birds, Surveillance Plan for the Early Detection of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in Migratory Birds in the United States: Surveillance Year 2009 . Canada’s Inter-Agency Wild Bird Influenza Survey has been monitoring for influenza A viruses since 2005, and is currently working on developing their 2009 Survey Operational Plan [pdf]. Select data collected through both of these surveillance efforts have been made available to the public.
Surveillance Plan for the Early Detection of H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus in Migratory Birds in the United States: Surveillance Year 2009
This Plan describes efforts to conduct surveillance of wild birds in the United States and its Territories and Freely-Associated States to provide for early detection of the introduction of the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) subtype of the influenza A virus by migratory birds during the 2009 surveillance year, spanning the period of April 1, 2009 – March 31, 2010. Avian Influenza Data and Information: Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Early Detection Data System (HEDDS)
HEDDS contains the HPAI data collected from wild birds, sentinel birds and the environment throughout the United States by participating agencies and organizations. The public access to the HEDDS system provides maps and tables showing the total number of samples collected by state dating back to 2005.

Canada's Inter-Agency Wild Bird Influenza Survey - 2009
From the Canadian Cooperative Wildlife Health Center web site, visitors can view online reports dating back to 2005 that provide summery test results of samples taken from wild birds, live and dead. The surveillance results can be viewed by species, region as well as by the H stain type. A draft of the proposed 2009 Survey Operational Plan can be found here. [pdf]
