As animal and human welfare are increasingly intertwined, veterinarians are playing a key role in keeping us all thriving.
Kristine Smith, V02, is garbed in face mask and gloves, taking blood samples from white swans. It's not unusual work for a veterinarian, except that Smith isn't in a clinic—she's by an isolated lake in northern Mongolia. And it's not the only place she's done this kind of work. In the last several years, she's been in locales as far-flung as South Africa, Kazakhstan and Cambodia. Her goal is simple, even if achieving it isn't: to understand the transmission of avian influenza by wild birds.

Something is fishy at Cooke Pond in Oscoda, with the die-off of hundreds of carp from the pond, according to residents. Clarence Raymond, who has been fishing in the area since the 1960s, said he first noticed the dead fish a little more than a week ago. “I didn’t see anything until a friend of mine came out and said, ‘Did you see all the dead carp?’ I went down and checked and, sure enough, they were there.”

A 40-foot-long decomposed whale has washed ashore on a Plymouth beach, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. . . . The Coast Guard sent out a 25-foot boat crew this morning to search for any boats that may have struck the whale, she said. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is aware of the beaching and has sent a response crew with the New England Aquarium to confirm reports that a whale has washed ashore and identify the species, said Mendy Garron, the NOAA’s northeast region marine mammal stranding coordinator. A dead whale had been seen floating in the area for about a week, but it’s unclear if the whale that washed ashore this morning is that same whale, said Kate Sardi, a senior biologist in the rescue department of the New England Aquarium.
