In the Spotlight - Upcoming Wildlife Health Related Meetings

3rd International Berlin Bat Meeting: Bats in the Anthropocene
March 1 - March 3, 2013

The aim of this conference is to foster an exchange of ideas among international specialists working on bats that live in landscapes formed by humans over the past hundreds and thousands of years, i.e. the Anthropocene.

We are especially keen on crossing disciplinary boundaries and hope that the discussion among ecologists, physiologists, conservationists, veterinarians and medical doctors will advance the field substantially.

We suggest several exciting topics as sessions or workshops. In addition, we have invited plenary speakers to review controversial and exciting developments in their respective research areas.

16th International Congress on Infectious Diseases (ICID)

The 16th International Congress on Infectious Diseases meeting will encompass all of the fields in infectious diseases with particular attention being paid to the major infectious causes of death in Africa and elsewhere, which include AIDS, malaria, TB, pneumonia and enteric infections including typhoid fever and diarrhea. In addition there are major areas of neglected tropical diseases that will be discussed and a particular focus will be on the largely uncounted burden of nosocomial infections in developing countries.

This unquie conference will bring together specialists in the fields of avian, herpetological and exotic mammal medicine (e.g. rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets). This portion of the conference is followed by scientific sessions reporting the latest developments in the field, as well as providing case and experience reports for the practitioner. A main focus is veterinary species conservation as this affects all animal groups.

In the Spotlight: Upcoming WDA/EWDA Joint Conference and Student Awards Competition

2012 Joint WDA EWDA Conference: Convergence in Wildlife Health

From conference website: The 61st International conference of the WDA and the 10th biennial conference of the EWDA will be jointly organized in Lyon, France from Sunday July 22nd through Friday July 27th 2012.

The main topic of the conference will be "convergence in wildlife health". The organizing and scientific committees are aiming at gathering experts in wildlife health from a wide range of experiences and origins.

Encouraging abstract submissions on these themes:

  • One Health
  • Migration and infectious disease risk
  • How to assess the health status of a wildlife animal population
  • Weighing costs and benefits of wildlife disease control
  • Effects of multiple pollutants on a single host



2012 WDA/EWDA Student Awards Competition


The Wildlife Disease Association (WDA) annually offers four student awards. In addition, the European WDA (EWDA) is offering a student travel award for the 2012 joint meeting! Students are encouraged to compete for the following awards:

1) WDA Graduate Student Research Recognition Award:
This award is given to the student judged to have the best research project in the field of wildlife health or disease.

2) WDA Graduate Student Scholarship Award:
This award acknowledges outstanding academic and research accomplishment, productivity, and future potential in pursuit of new knowledge in wildlife disease or health.

3) WDA Terry Amundson Student Presentation Award:
This award acknowledges outstanding oral presentation of research findings at the annual WDA conference.

4) WDA Student Poster Award:
This award goes to the best student poster detailing a wildlife disease or wildlife health research project presented at the annual WDA conference.

5) EWDA Student Travel Award:
A maximum of four suitable students will be awarded 250 euro each.

The 60th Wildlife Disease Association (WDA) Annual International Meeting will be held August 14 – 19, 2011. This is going to be the first time that this international meeting will take place in the Province of Québec or eastern Canada. The American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians (AAWV) will be meeting in conjunction with WDA and are one of the meetings sponsors.

This year’s theme, "Wildlife Resources in a Changing World", will highlight the historical and contemporary significance of wildlife species as a resource for both native and non-native inhabitants of the province of Quebec. This sustainable use of wildlife as a resource is increasingly challenged by the growing changes in ecosystems, population dynamics and intrinsic values that wildlife have in the modern world.


Topics at this meeting will include:

  • Disease Ecology
  • Surveys & New Reports
  • Tools & Techniques
  • Wildlife – Domestic - Human Animal Interface
  • Socio-political Challenges of Disease Management
  • Impact of diseases on wildlife resources
  • Marine / aquatic health issues
  • Canadian Wildlife

Who should attend and/or submit abstracts?


Wildlife biologists, wildlife managers, veterinarians, epidemiologists, ecologists, parasitologists, pathologists, microbiologists, or anyone interested in the management of wildlife populations, their health and health of humans using wildlife resources.
