Lincoln Park Zoo has been awarded a grant by The Davee Foundation to establish a new research division, the Urban Wildlife Institute, which will focus studies on the interactions between urban dwellers and wildlife, and utilize sound science to create best practice conflict resolution. The institute aims to integrate landscape and animal ecology with epidemiology research to create a holistic approach to ecosystem health as it applies to urban settings. The goal of the institute is to use Chicago as a model for other urban areas struggling to deal with wildlife relocation, rehabilitation, disease and conflicts.

Three dead bats turned over to Sussex County health officials this week did not have rabies, but, with no protocol to follow, authorities don't know if the flying mammals might have been suffering from white-nose syndrome.

The syndrome, named for the white fungus usually found on the muzzle of dead and dying bats, has been confirmed in New Jersey and could lead to a serious mortality rate among bats. . .

Two of the bats were found inside homes, one Monday in Sparta and one Tuesday in Vernon. The third bat was discovered outside Tuesday in the Church Street area of Vernon.

A bill that would legally recognize bison as "valued native wildlife in the state of Montana" is expected to draw a large crowd at a House Fish, Wildlife & Parks Committee hearing today.

House Bill 253, referred to as the "Montana Wild Buffalo Recovery and Conservation Act of 2009" by its supporters, would hand management control of bison from the state Department of Livestock to the Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks. . .

Opponents of the bill say bison carry a disease that threatens domestic cattle, and HB253 leaves too many unanswered questions.
