Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary says it has been getting an unusually large number of calls about sick or dead songbirds found under bird feeders, particularly pine siskins, goldfinches and house finches species. The sanctuary staff believes salmonella is the cause, and it is asking residents to do their part in helping to stop it from spreading.

Oodles of turtles fill bubbling pools at the Marine Science Center these days as its staff scrambles to keep up with mass strandings along Florida's northeast coast. About 170 turtles, both greens and loggerheads, have been found either dead or sick and emaciated on beaches from Jacksonville to Brevard County since January.




Chronic wasting disease spreading

Eight new cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in wild deer were found as part of the 2008 fall surveillance for the disease, according to provincial government figures. The new cases were found among the 4,347 deer heads that have been tested since last Sept. 1.

Testing is being done on several dead birds that are washing ashore on the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas. Wildlife officials say that starvation has been noted in a number of the birds examined. Well over 100 dead birds have been collected to date with more expected to come ashore. Recovery of more birds on the Avalon and Bonavista Peninsulas continues.
