The purpose of the symposium is to understand and exchange information about infectious diseases transmitted among wild and captive animals with a significant impact on the ecosystem, the livestock industry and human society such as highly pathogenic avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease, and also to conduct fundamental research to implement through collaboration among global regions for preventing infectious diseases using zoo networks in the world.

Since its inception, IMED has been a summit that unifies its approach to pathogens in the broadest ecological context.
