The purpose of the symposium is to understand and exchange information about infectious diseases transmitted among wild and captive animals with a significant impact on the ecosystem, the livestock industry and human society such as highly pathogenic avian influenza and foot-and-mouth disease, and also to conduct fundamental research to implement through collaboration among global regions for preventing infectious diseases using zoo networks in the world.

The Conference serves as an international forum for sharing evidence for health related policies and strengthens social commitments for health development. The theme of the 2013 conference, "A World United Against Infectious Diseases: Cross-Sectoral Solutions", is dedicated to transparent and progressive resolve to reduce the threat of infectious diseases through cross-sectoral and international cooperation and communication.

Drawing together human and veterinary health specialists, IMED serves as a true One Health forum where those working in diverse specialties and diverse regions can meet, discuss, present and challenge one another with findings and new ideas.
