Study to track brucellosis in elk

Is the rise in brucellosis among elk related to their increasing concentration on private lands as they avoid hunters and predators?

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is hoping to get an answer from a five-year study being launched around the Greater Yellowstone Area, where the contagious disease is confined.

“We haven't identified specific causations, but there are similarities” to Wyoming's feedgrounds, said Quentin Kujala, FWP's wildlife management section chief.

State plans to euthanize large herd of white-tailed deer

The State of Texas is making final preparations to destroy a Hunt County herd of 75 captive deer on Monday.

Officials with Texas Parks and Wildlife say it’s a precaution against introducing a devastating illness into the state called chronic wasting disease, or CWD.

CWD has been compared to mad cow disease.

USGS and a network of partners across the country work on documenting wildlife mortality events in order to provide timely and accurate information on locations, species and causes of death. This information was updated on December 03, 2010 on the USGS National Wildlife Health Center web page, New and Ongoing Wildlife Mortality Events Nationwide. Quarterly Mortality Reports are also available from this page. These reports go back to 1995.
